Inazuma Eleven 11 anime Level-5

Level-5 is helping needy children by giving them soccer balls. Yes, you read correctly. To promote the latest Inazuma Eleven DS games in Japan and support charity, Level-5 started an Africa 11 campaign.

For each copy of Inazuma Eleven: Sekai e no Chousen!! Spark and Bomber sold, 11 yen was donated to UNICEF. While that may seem like a small figure, it resulted in over 20,000 soccer balls being donated to needy schools in South Africa. Besides, over 500,000 copies of Inazuma Eleven 3 were sold in the first week after their release and over 1,100,000 copies of Inazuma Eleven 3 were sold between the launch date and September, 2010.

Level-5’s 11 for Africa promotion began in July 2010, when the two versions of the Inazuma Eleven 3 game was released. It is also part of Hide Nakata’s Take Action Foundation program, which tries to help solve problems around the world with various campaigns, special events and soccer matches. In addition to Level-5’s recent UNICEF donation, there was also a charity auction for Haiti relief efforts earlier this year that benefitted World Food Program (WFP) and the We are the World Foundation and in 2009 there was a CLICK fundraiser with Toshiba to help work with the WFP to get food for 100,000 Kenyan children.

Kudos to Level-5 on its charity work. It’s always nice to hear about a company giving back to help make the world a better place. And it’s nice to know that buying a soccer video game could help a less fortunate child actually get to play soccer.

Hot Japanese Imports: 2010 Japanese novelty gift guide

Section: Exclusives, Originals, Features, Columns, Gift Guide, Japanese Imports, Consoles, Wii, Gear, Accessories, Controllers, Figures & Toys, Gear-Other

Hot Japanese Imports logo

While buying games and consoles as holiday gifts are an awesome idea, they’re also fairly expected. Besides, what happens if you have a friend or family member that you want to get a gift for, but you don’t want to spend $50 on. Because if you’re going to get any import game, odds are you’re going to be spending at least $45 on them. Time for a Japanese novelty or gadget!

See, with an imported toy or gadget you’re still telling someone you care enough about them to pick out something exotic and have it shipped from overseas, but you probably won’t be spending an excessive amount of money on it. Hot Japanese Imports today suggests eight unusual items that might work as a unique stocking stuffer.

4 in 1 SNES NES Genesis N64 Wii Controller Adapter4 in 1 SNES/NES/Genesis/N64 Wii Controller Virtual Adapter
Price? $19.99
Who has it? Japan Video Games
What is it? An adapter that lets you play Wii Virtual Console games with the original controller to provide a more realistic retro gaming experience. It only works with games that would normally have GameCube controller support.
Who would want it? Wii owners who love retro games and have some old console controllers lying around.

Animal Crossing Alarm Clock
Price? $10.50
Who has it? National Console Support, Inc.
What is it? A metal alarm clock with Tom Nook, K.K. Slider or Rosie on it.
Who would want it? Animal Crossing-fanatics. Or people who like cute, anthropomorphic animals.

Fridgeezoo Fridge Pet
Price? Around $22
Who has it? Strapya World
What is it? A Fridgeezoo Fridge Pet looks like a carton of milk with a Penguin, Polar Bear, Seal or Walrus design. When you open the fridge door, the character talks to you. (In Japanese, of course.) They say hello, ask how you’re doing and remind you to close the door.
Who would want it? Maybe someone with young kids. I bet they’d get a kick out of an animal-design milk carton that talks. College students too.

Egg Shaped Kitten
Price? $9.20
Who has it? Strapya World
What is it? An egg shaped kitten. It’s sort of like a Weebles toy. You can hold it in your hand or place it on a flat surface, and it looks adorable. If you touch it, it will meow. There are five different designs.
Who’d want it? Cat lovers. People who are easily amused and like little knick-knacks. Cat owners might enjoy seeing their pets play with it.

Itazura Coin Bank
Price? Around $22
Who has it? Strapya World
What is it? A robotic bank with a kitten or puppy inside. You put a coin on the sensor and the animal will peek up, extend a paw and drag the coin inside the box. It will also meow or bark, depending on which animal is inside.
Who would want it? Animal lovers and kids.

Maywa Denki Otamatone Melody
Price? Around $16
Who has it? AmiAmi
What is it? A keychain shaped like an eighth note. There is a smiling face on the note head. It is available in four colors (white, black, pink, blue) and plays 11 songs in 3 different octaves.
Who would want it? Musicians. Someone with keys who needs a new keychain.

USB Head Bobble Pikachu PokemonUSB Pikachu
Price? Around $35
Who has it? Strapya World
What is it? A little robotic Pikachu. You plug it into your computer’s USB port to make his head bob and his cheeks light up. You can pose him on your desk or clip him onto the top of your monitor. He might also just kind of tilt his head, knowingly.
Who would want it? Anyone who doesn’t mind a miniature pikachu watching his or her every move.

USB X’mas Tree
Price? $9.99
Who has it? Play-Asia
What is it? A miniature christmas tree that plugs into your computer’s USB drive. It will then glow, changing colors every once in a while.
Who would want it? Someone who wants to make their desktop a little more festive without doing a lot of work. You could also probably use it as a small lamp or night light.

Kairosoft bringing Game Dev Story 2 to iOS

Kairosoft bringing Game Dev Story 2 to iOS

Section: Gaming News, Features, Japanese Imports, Handhelds, iPhone & iPod Touch & iPad, Game-Companies, Developers, Publishers, Genres, 2D, Sim

Game Dev Story iPhone iOSGood news if you can’t get enough of Game Dev StoryGame Dev Story 2 is on the way! Kairosoft was pleasantly surprised by how many people loved the English version of its game developer management simulation and has decided to move forward with an English version of the sequel. Be patient though, as it won’t be out for a while.

Kairosoft is working on an iOS port of Game Dev Story 2, but at the moment it’s preoccupied with another iOS app. It is working on a city management simulation right now, so the English version of Game Dev Story 2 will have to wait until that’s done. In a way, that’s good news too, because Kairosoft is hoping to eventually release English versions of all of its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad games in North America. Plus, when Game Dev Story 2 is finally released, it’ll have network features that will allow you to compare your game to your friends’.

This all means you’ll have to make due with the original Game Dev Story for a while longer. It’s $3.99 on iTunes and is playable on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. In case you’re curious what it’s like, check out the adventures of Jeremy Hill’s Game Dev Story company. In the next entry, his original developer starts making handheld games. As for me, I’m off to Kairosoft’s website to pick up a copy of the PC version of Game Dev Story and see if I can give it a try.

Japan Import: Final Fantasy Trading Card Game coming in 2011

Japan Import: Final Fantasy Trading Card Game coming in 2011

Section: Gaming News, Features, Japanese Imports, Game-Companies, Developers, Publishers, Genres, CCG & TCG, Web-Sites, Official-Sites

Final Fantasy Trading Card Game logoWhen you think about the whole “gotta get’em all” theory, you usually think Pokemon. But soon, that notion will apply to Final Fantasy. Square Enix is currently working on a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game. You still have time to start saving though, as it has only just been announced for Japan, and won’t even appear there until February 25, 2011.

Details are very vague at the moment, and the brand new FF-TCG website doesn’t help much. It will be a standard TCG, where people collect the cards and use them to stage battles and attacks. Summons will be available, and there will be character cards featuring prominent heroes and villains from the Final Fantasy universe. The site reveals a few of the familiar faces we’ll be seeing when the game launches. Right now only Cloud, Sephiroth and Zidane have been officially announced (all three have Dissidia: Final Fantasy under their names), but some of the other character shadows look quite familiar. I spy Aerith (FFVII), a sage (FFIII), Yuna (FFX) and Lightning (FFXIII). I can’t tell who those other two figures are though. Any guesses?

If you’re really excited about the FF-TCG, you may want to consider importing a copy of The 3rd Birthday (PSP). While there isn’t much FF-TCG information on the site, Square Enix did make sure to announce that all copies of The 3rd Birthday will come with an exclusive card you can use in the FF-TCG. I’m tempted to say it’s an Aya Brea card, but I’m not sure there’ll be cross-overs in this trading card game. Perhaps it’ll be a special Lightning card, what with the Aya Brea/Lightning costume swaps.

If you’re in a betting mood, I’d say you could make some easy money by betting that the Japanese copy of Dissidia 012: duodecim will include a FF-TCG card!

Japan Import: Taiko Drum Master Wii: Everyone’s Party 3 has lots of cameos

Japan Import: Taiko Drum Master Wii: Everyone’s Party 3 has lots of cameos

Section: Gaming News, Features, Japanese Imports, Consoles, Wii, Game-Companies, Developers, Publishers, Genres, 2D, Music, Party

Taiko Drum Master Wii 3 Everyone's Party New Super Mario Bros Wii 太鼓の達人Wii みんなでパーティ☆3代目!

Taiko Drum Master Wii: Everyone’s Party 3, the latest Taiko Drum Master (Taiko no Tatsujin) game, is going to have a lot of famous faces appearing in it. The famous anthropomorphic drum characters Don and Katsu will be joined by Idolm@ster, Monster Hunter and even Super Mario characters.

Said characters won’t be playable though. In all Taiko Drum Master games, there are always little character dancing underneath the drum portion that tells players what kind of notes to play. The cameo characters will appear in that spot when certain songs are played. For example, the Super Mario characters shown above will appear whenever someone plays the “New Super Mario Bros. Wii” theme song in Taiko Drum Master Wii 3. The chibi-fied felynes from Monster Hunter Diary (PSP) will dance around when the “Monster Hunter Medley” is played and Idolm@ster idols show up to perform when you play “Over Master.”

The tracklist for Taiko Drum Master Wii 3 is going to have around 70 songs, with a Miku Hatsune song included, as well as themes from the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Naruto Shippuden and One Piece animes. Namco Bandai hasn’t revealed if those tracks will have Vocaloids, pokemon, ninjas or pirates dancing around though.

So far, it looks like Taiko Drum Master Wii 3 will be yet another Japan-exclusive game. This one is designed to be the biggest yet, with the aforementioned huge track listing, ability to have four people playing at once and seven rhythm-based mini-games. If you own a Japanese Wii, you can import it after it comes out on December 2, 2010.

Hot Japanese Imports: 2010 console import gift guide

Section: Gaming News, Exclusives, Originals, Features, Columns, Gift Guide, Japanese Imports, Consoles, PS3, Wii, Xbox-360, Genres, 2D, 3D, Action, Adventure, Fighting, Shooter, Racing, Role-Playing, Sim

Hot Japanese Imports logo

The Hot Japanese Imports gift guide deluge of 2010 continues! This week, I’ve put together a selection of nine import console games that could make great gifts this year. There are three PS3, three Xbox 360 and three Wii games listed below. Perhaps one could be a nice surprise for someone you love.

Now remember – only PS3 games are region-free. If the person you’re shopping for bought their Wii in the US, don’t buy them a game on this list. They won’t be able to play them. Also, double check before buying any of the Xbox 360 games on this list, as some are region-free and some are region-locked.

Dream C Club Xbox 360 ドリームクラブDream C Club Platinum Collection
Price? Around $35
System? Xbox 360
Genre? Dating Sim
Import-Friendly? Nope. It’s region-locked so it only plays on Japanese Xbox 360s. Also, it’s text heavy.
Summary? This is a dating simulation where you have one year to visit a hostess club and try to win the heart of one of the hostesses by talking to her and playing mini-games together.

Espgaluda II Black Label
Price? Around $75
System? Xbox 360
Genre? Shoot’em Up
Import-Friendly? Yes. It’s region-free and you don’t really need to read to shoot enemies out of the sky.

Hakuoki: Junsouroku
Price? Around $77
System? PS3
Genre? Visual Novel / Girl’s Dating Sim (otome)
Import-Friendly? No. There’s LOTS of text.
Summary? This is a dating sim for women set in the Bakumatsu period and starring members of the Shinsengumi as chasable bachelors. The PS3 release includes a port of the original PS2 games Hakuoki and the sequel/fan disc Hakuoki: Zuisouroku. In it the Shinsengumi have been cursed and players step into the shoes of Chizuru, a daughter of a doctor who is searching for a cure for them.

Initial D Extreme Stage (Best Version)
Price? Around $45
System? PS3
Genre? Racing
Import-Friendly? Yup. There’s some text and event scenes from the Initial D series, but it’s mostly about racing.
Summary? If you’re tired of waiting for Gran Turismo 5, pick this up instead. It’s cheaper and already available. It has over 20 cars, over 25 drivers and eight race courses from the series. Unfortunately, you can’t download additional DLC content unless you have a Japanese PSN account.

Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
Price? Around $75
System? Xbox 360
Genre? Shoot’em Up
Import-Friendly? Yup. It’s region-free and doesn’t require really any reading skills.
Summary? A shoot’em up where you head into a forest to shoot down lots of giant beetles and search for a missing prince. You can go through as either the younger prince Palm or the forest goddess Reco.

Tales of Graces
Price? Around $75
System? Wii
Genre? RPG
Import-Friendly? Nope. It’s an RPG, which means there’s lots of text. Plus, it only plays on Japanese Wiis.
Summary? This follows the adventures of Asbel, son of the lord of the city of Lhant. He decided to become a knight after his friend Sophie supposedly and mysteriously died, but abandons his dream and steps up to be Lhant’s lord after his father died. But is Sophie really dead?

テイルズ オブ グレイセス f Tales of Graces F PS3Tales of Graces F
Price? Around $65
System? PS3
Genre? RPG
Import-Friendly? Yes and no. Yes, because its region-free and will play on any PS3. No, because it’s a text-heavy RPG.
Summary? See what I wrote for Tales of Graces Wii? Put all that here, only add improved since this new version, which comes out December 2, has an additional character, more costumes, more skills and an Accel battle mode.

Twinkle Queen
Price? Around $65
System? Wii
Genre? Fighting
Import-Friendly? No – it isn’t region-free and will only play on Japanese Wiis. If you have a Japanese Wii, then yes. It’s a fighting game so there’s little text.
Summary? This is a fighting game for 1-4 people starring famous female characters from multiple adult dating simulations. For example, there are characters from Shukufuku no Campanella and Shin Koihime Musou. It is an all-ages game, despite the adult-game character cameos.

Xenoblade

Genre? Action RPG
Import-Friendly? Nope. It’s an RPG and a region-locked, Japanese Wii game.
Summary? A steampunk-RPG where humans are fighting against strange machine soldiers, trying to survive. Players start the adventure helping Shulk get revenge on the people who destroyed his hometown.

Japan Import: Get Idolm@ster 2 on February 24, 2010

Section: Gaming News, Features, Japanese Imports, Consoles, Xbox-360, Game-Companies, Developers, Publishers, Genres, 3D, Music, Sim

Idolmaster 2 Idolm@ster 2 Xbox 360 Little Match Girl

Idolm@ster fans won’t have to wait too long after the new year starts before they can start making singers famous. Namco Bandai has announced that the Idolm@ster 2 Xbox 360 game will be released on February 24, 2010. I hope you have a spare ¥8,800 (~$105), because that’s what one copy will cost. Keep in mind, that’s the price for a standard edition copy, and not some super-secret-deluxe edition.

If it makes you feel any better, the launch copies of Idolm@ster 2 will come with some extra goodies. The box will be sparkly, you’ll get a 765 ID card, four idol pictures and a voucher to download the song “Little Match Girl” for the idols to sing. That should take the sting out of paying so much!

This Japanese PV for Idolm@ster 2 should give you some idea of what to expect.

The game’s full track listing has not been leaked yet. Three songs have been revealed in commercials for the game though. “The World is All One” appeared in the trailer you just watched, “Smoky Thrill” appeared in another and the three Idolm@ster 2 guys appeared in another trailer singing “Alice or Guilty.” I’m sure tracks from the original Idolm@ster, and perhaps even Idolm@ster SP, will appear.

I wouldn’t advise placing an Idolm@ster 2 order yet. Well, if you own a Japanese Xbox 360 you can. But if you own a North American or European system, hold off. We don’t know yet if Idolm@ster 2 will be region-locked or not. Some import Xbox 360 games are region-locked and others are region-free. Both of the previous Idolm@ster Xbox 360 games were region-locked. Yes, it may mean you’ll miss out on getting the launch copy extras, but it also means you won’t get stuck owning a game you can’t play.

Japan Import: Bleach: Soul Ignition site opens, screenshots revealed

    Bleach Soul Ignition PS3

The first Bleach PS3 game is in development and while Sony has been tight-lipped about Bleach: Soul Ignition so far, information should start flowing in soon. After all, that’s what tends to happen after an official website is opened. Fans can head there right now and start looking at all the pretty pictures. It’s not like there’s much else to do there yet.

While Bleach: Soul Ignition site doesn’t offer much useful information, the few available screenshots actually do good job of giving us hints at gameplay. We see Ichigo, Rukia and Uryu in battle, which infers all three are going to be playable. We also see lots of Arrancar in the Ichigo and Uryu screenshots, so it looks like Bleach: Soul Ignition is a beat-em up, rather than a fighter like entries in the PSP Bleach: Heat the Soul series. It will retain the cell-shaded characters though! So it will look like Heat the Soul, but probably play a little more like the Bleach: Soul Carnival PSP series.

We’ll likely know more in the coming months, since Bleach: Soul Ignition won’t be released until 2011. And remember – you won’t need to really wait for a US company to localize and release it. The PS3 is region-free, so you could always import Bleach: Soul Ignition when it comes out and enjoy it on your own system. As long as it isn’t an RPG, it should be fairly easy to manage with minimal knowledge of Japanese.
