Can a first generation PS2 play japanese games?

    No. the north american ps2 can only play NTSC format. if the Jap game is for some reason NTSC then it can be played.

    nope not with out a mod chip
    if you purchase a mod chip and install it inside your ps2 you can play Japaneses games and games you make copies of

    plain and simple, NO.

    you need a Japanese PS2 to play Japanese games, or you need a mod chip. I’ve also heard a lot of people say Swap Magic, but I’m not sure what it is, so I’m not recommending it. if you want to check it out, that’s up to you.

    you can mod your ps2 with the chip and risk putting too much solder on a contact and bridging it to another contact which will brick your ps2 (one drop too much and you’re out of luck) or you can use swap magic:

    this is really the best way to play your out of region or backup games. it’s much safer, especially if you dont have experience with soldering. dont forget that you will also need a swap tool (probably the slide, the site can help you figure out which one you need) or it won’t work.
