There’s good news and bad news from Japan today for everyone who’s been lamenting the lack of Shenmue over the past ten years. The good news is, a third Shenmue game is on the way, called Shenmue City. The bad news is, it’s going to be a social network style game created for the new Japanese Yahoo! Mobage service. Just let that sink in for a second, and when you’re ready you can keep reading.

The announcement was made today and, unfortunately, there aren’t any details about gameplay. All Yahoo! Japan and DeNa said was that Shenmue City is being developed for Yajoo! Mobage, it’s related to the whole Shenmue universe and it’ll be available in Winter, 2010. What a wonderful reward for those devoted Shenmue fans who’ve been waiting for resolution all these years.

The first entry in the series, Shenmue, which covered the first chapter in Ryo Hazuki’s story, was released in 1999 in Japan and 2000 in North America on the Dreamcast. The sequel, which covered the third, fourth and fifth chapters, was released on the Dreamcast in 2001 and the Xbox in 2002. There was almost a Shenmue Online MMORPG in 2004, which would have tied in with Shenmue II and offered an expanded look at the clan activity that took place in that entry, but it never came to fruition.
