Will all ps3 games work on my Japanese ps3?

I bought a ps3 from Japan and a couple games but I live in Australia. I have an old sdtv that supports 480i. All of the Japanese games work fine but i tried a couple of Australian games and only two out of the four of them have worked so far because of the unsupported video output error. Is the problem my old sdtv or the fact that my ps3 is Japanese?
